Dry Falls
Palouse, Washington
Left Lynden at 0900 hours on September 8th. It was clear and cool unlike the past few days. As soon as we reached Bellingham we were socked in with smoke from the fires throughout the state. We didn’t get out of the smoke until we crossed over Washington Pass on Hwy 20 going east. Stopped in Concrete and had lunch with friends Dave and Shellie Oslie. Reached Twisp at 1500 hours and stayed at Ron Van Deist’s place on the Twisp River overnight. September 9th dawned crystal clear and very cool. Started out at 0900 hours and had to stop at the bakery in Twisp to pick up some very delicious rolls. After turning left at Pateros, we noticed smoke on the east side of the Columbia River and saw that it had burned for several miles. On reaching Hwy 2 we turned up the hill and before dropping into Grand Coulee we saw that another several miles of sagebrush had burned. We stopped at Dry Falls and took some pictures. Before reaching Davenport, we drove through miles of what had just burned and some was still smoldering. To the south we saw huge billows of smoke and talked to some fire fighters from Montana. Stayed in a KOA on the e side of Spokane arriving at 1830. |
