The Sinks Canyon

September 14th.  It’s still so smoky that you can’t see more than a half a mile.  Not very healthy.  Left Columbia Falls and drove all day through some of the prettiest rolling hills and a lot of wheat fields.  Stopped and set up in a forest service campground call Aspen in the Little Belt Mountains.

September 15th.  Left the campground and drove south on Hwy 89 through more wheat and hills.  Reached interstate 90 and turned west to Livingston Montana.  Went through Livingston on Hwy 89 again towards Yellowstone National Park.  Traffic was pretty heavy and we couldn’t find a place to stay anywhere.  So…bag Yellowstone.  It was still smoky anyway.  L would note however, the Yellowstone River is sure pretty.  Drove east to big Timber Montana and found an RV park called Spring Creek.  What a nice place in the middle of nowhere.  Tomorrow we will drive up into the Great Bear Tooth Mountains to see what we can see.

September 16th.  Drove up towards the end of the road.  Pavement turned to gravel to nasty rock-strewn wagon track.  Finally turned around at about 1 mile from the end.  It was just too rough.  We never got above 4 miles an hour.  All was not lost though, today and tomorrow. We saw a Bull Moose, white tail deer, black tail deer, mule deer, antelope and a cow moose and her calf.  On the way back down, we stopped and looked at an old ranger’s cabin since restored and a cool disappearing river.
